I think that Lucy relationships are what makes the Scarpetta novels so different from all the other crime novels I've read. It is something no many writers would write about as they always seems to write about their main characters love lives. I love the part when Berger and Lucy first kissed. It was so powerful, that I had to read it 3 times.
Patricia Cornwell simply knows how to write about feelings, thats why people get hooked on her books. Lots of them see part of themself in the characters.
Listen to this I picked the Scarpetta book by mistake in the shop. Since I've read it I had to buy the other 15 and can not put them down.
Thank you very much PC.
Oh yes dear you're so right with that, Patricia definitely knows how to describe the emotions and the feelings that her characters are having , i love that the most , in Predator is also a very intense scene between Lucy and Stevie i read it so many times over and over again :-))
Ciao

I do like the idea of Lucy's affair with Berger. Something like that crossed my mind when Jaime first appeared in The Last Precinct. For me it's one of the interesting - and logical - plotlines, and... maybe this relationship finally IS the one that will last for Lucy?..
Lucy's too smart to be a pawn anyway.

By the way - what does POV stand for (fenderjazz's posting below)?
I meant POV to stand for point of view.
I agree with you that the characters' faults make the books more compelling. However, Lucy and Marino did go way over the top, but it appears that they are returning back to earth!
I think that having Lucy and Marino acting the way they do is one of the reasons these books are so well written. In order to have a great murder/mystery book you must at least have one person who has a bad attitude. I don't think that if these two were not like the way they are then these books wouldn't be worth reading. I like just the way the characters are in all of the books.
I agree with this 100%. The characters - and their depth/complexity - add heaps to the books. The brooding intensity of the story lines is more than enhanced by the personalities of the main characters. I wouldn't change them for quids.
I always got the impression Jaime was in her mid 40's, to me that is not old. I also thought Lucy was only about 8 years younger or so? Maybe my memory is not so good there but we do know that Berger is very attractive by the way she receives attention from law enforcement officers etc. Lucy is so accomplished and I'm sure not many her age could match that (if anyone ever could that is). Admiration, respect and a certain amount of power can be a real turn on. I think they are a great match but as both are feisty I don't know how long it will last. Just my opinion of course.
I remember that when Berger was introduced to us, she was described as being a few years older than Kay. Also, I think in Blow Fly we are told that Berger is 48 years old. However, in this series age is not that relevant considering Lucy aged about 10 yrs b/w two books and Kay never seems to age. The real problem I have with the Lucy Berger relationship is the fact that Berger is constently being compared to Kay, in looks, demeanor, they way their both perfectionists, ect. It's too much like Lucy is dating her aunt by proxy, it's rather creepy in my opinion.
Another thing is it also adds another level of disfunction and irrelavant story lines. Also, it appears the reader will now routinly be subject to Bergers POV. Too many characters watering down the novels. I prefer reading the chapters from Kay POV.

Agree with you here.....I do not like Jaime for Lucy at all, I feel as though Lucy is just a pawn in Jaime's game. And I am not comfortable with that. Jaime is too old for Lucy.

You know...I was just re-reading these posts. I did like Lucy a lot more in Book of the Dead and Scarpetta. However, I am still not happy with this relationship she is forming with Jaime Berger. Berger is much older than Lucy and their characters just don't see quite compatible. It seems that, eventually, one of them will get tired of the other other one always believing they're right. Lucy will probably end up leaving (I hope). Berger doesn't seem sure that she really wants to be with Lucy. She's always struck me as wishy washy. Plus, the fact that she was married just doesn't sit well with me either. Lucy needs to be with someone closer to her own age, stable, with some of her similiar interests. Jaime is just not the right person for Lucy and I don't think she ever will be. I hope this relationship doesn't last. The only person I've really only liked Lucy with is Janet. She was good for her. Of course, I loved her relationship with Carrie. Talk about intense. Carrie was just am amazing character and I would love to see her return. Hey,if Benton can come back from the dead....
